A group of Biomedical Scientists from the Blood Sciences department have raised more than £1,000 for Shropshire, Staffordshire and Cheshire Blood Bikes (SSCBB) by running long distance races.
The charity provides free urgent transportation of medical items, for the NHS & Hospices across our region, especially blood components for transfusion and patient samples for testing.
After working with SSCBB volunteers for over two years, Biomedical Scientists Clare Barnard, Hayley Cadman, Helen Mossman, Ryan Williams, Lorna Zhao, Lucy Kirkham, Julie Pierce and Mais Al-Hasani decided to support them by running either the Chester 10K on 4 March or the Chester Half Marathon on 29 April. This week the team, who ran under the name "Blood, Sweat and Cheers", presented the charity with a cheque.
Senior Biomedical Scientist Clare said: “These volunteers provide us with such a reliable service, 24 hours per day, at no cost to the Trust, and help us to give our patients better treatment through avoiding unnecessary delays. We decided to fundraise for the Blood Bikes to help raise awareness of the work these volunteers do.”
Receiving the cheque Steve Hunter, the Cheshire Area Lead for SSCBB, said that the money the team had raised would pay for approximately nine months of fuel for one Blood Bike, or five sets of tyres.
The team hopes to continue fundraising for SSCBB by entering more running events in the future.
